After making history as the first woman of color to helm a $100 million-plus live-action film in A Wrinkle In Time, Ava DuVernay will continue to play in the event film sandbox. She’s closing a deal with Warner Bros and DC to direct a big-budget screen adaptation of The New Gods, the creation of revered comic book impresario Jack Kirby. The studio has set Kario Salem (Chasing Mavericks) as the writer; he’ll craft the narrative and work closely with DuVernay.
The New Gods is not a free standing world...
It is the exact world that Steppenwolf, the oh so forgettable villain from Justice League, comes from. DC's movie house is in complete disarray and this is just a bizarre project too announce at this time. Not to mention the New Gods are very much a fantasy type world and her big budget fantasy movie just flopped. Very strange on all fronts.

Jack Kirby is undeniably The King and Ava DuVernay does excellent work...
The New Gods mythos offers so many ways to tell a cool, weird, amazing tale the likes of which we’ve never seen before. But that Warner Bros./DC logo taints everything it touches in Hollywood. I want this project to turn out great, but it won’t unless Warner Bros. management is completely gutted and replaced with a more intelligent, savvy group with ideas beyond “let’s just do what Marvel is doing, only worse.”
